Rathmines Folk Group

Our mission is to enhance the 6pm Mass each Sunday through music and song.

Folk group

The Folk Mass in Rathmines was started in October 1972 by the priests of the parish, one of whom was chaplain to the local St. Louis convent and it was from there that the original members came. A short time later, the first three males joined the Group. That outstanding team of priests and young people laid the foundations for nearly 40 years of music and prayer at the 6 o'clock Folk Mass and it has never missed one Sunday in all that time. Since 1972, over 200 people have been members of the Group and more than 25 priests have been involved from the parish. In addition to singing at this Mass, the Group regularly sing in other parishes or at fund-raising events, as well as television appearances. In 1997 the Group was presented with a Papal Blessing for its contribution to the Parish.

In addition to providing the music for the Mass in Rathmines, the Group have provided their service to the following:

• RTE TV Masses and Services, including broadcasts across Europe

• Prison masses

• Interdenominational services in St. Patrick's Cathedral

• Memorial services for Our Lady's Children's Hospital

• Ceremonies in both Blackrock and Our Lady's Hospices

• Commemorative masses for deceased members of the Armed Forces

• Providing assistance to new/existing folk groups

The group is made up of 23 singers and 7 musicians, aged 21+ and come from all over the country. The music for each mass is aligned with the theme of the day with the intention of creating a cohesive unit between the music, the liturgy and the priest's sermon in order to reflect modern day living.

The Group rehearses each Wednesday from 8.15pm in its own music room in the church, and at 5.15pm each Sunday prior to the Mass.
